Description
The tortoise shell is a members-only item in RuneScape 3. It is dropped by tortoises and warped tortoises, and both monsters can drop up to three shells in a single kill. Spirit implings can also drop one shell.
The main use for tortoise shells is Summoning. With level 67 Summoning, players use them to make war tortoise pouches. The war tortoise is a Beast of Burden that can carry 18 items for you. Many high-level players like this familiar because it holds a lot and does not need a very high level to summon.
Shells can also be sold to Barlak in Dorgesh-Kaan for coins, which makes them a handy pickup for extra money. The item is tradeable and noteable, so it is easy to move or sell. It can be disassembled too, giving mostly simple parts and sometimes variable components.
The tortoise shell came out on 24 April 2006, before the Summoning skill existed. Its examine text, "A word in your shell-like," is a playful nod to an old phrase about the shape of a person's ear.
