Ancient essence is a stackable, tradeable item in Old School RuneScape. It is described in game as pure magical energy filled with a dark power. It is a members-only item and it is the most traded Old School-exclusive item on the Grand Exchange.

Players use ancient essence for a few strong upgrades. With 91 Herblore, it can be mixed with ancient brews to make forgotten brews. You can combine 150,000 essence with an imbued heart to make the saturated heart. It is also used to charge the Venator bow, which turns on the bow's passive effect.

Getting essence in game takes work. It drops from the Phantom Muspah boss. It can also be mined from ancient essence crystals in the Ghorrock Dungeon, which needs 75 Mining. Even at high Mining levels, players only gather about 1,200 to 2,500 essence per hour. Breaking down an ancient icon gives 5,000 essence, and a venator shard gives 50,000.

Buying ancient essence lets you skip the slow grind. With a big stack, you can charge your Venator bow, brew forgotten brews, or work toward a saturated heart right away.
