The Lava scale shard is a members-only item in Old School RuneScape. It is a ground-up lava dragon scale. Shards are stackable, tradeable, and weigh nothing, so they are easy to store and carry.

Lava scale shards are made by using a pestle and mortar on a lava scale. Lava scales drop from lava dragons and brutal black dragons. Grinding one scale gives 3 to 6 shards, and higher Herblore levels give more on average. With the hard Wilderness Diary done, the amount goes up by 50%, so a scale can give 4, 6, 7, or 9 shards. Players can also get shards by using a hammer on an infernal eel, which needs level 80 Fishing to catch.

These shards matter for Herblore training and dragon fights. They are a key ingredient in extended antifires and extended super antifires. Making these potions needs level 84 and level 98 Herblore, and each dose uses one shard. These potions protect players from dragonfire for a longer time, which makes them a smart pick for anyone fighting dragons.
