The red onion is a mega produce item in RuneScape 3. It is a bigger and stronger version of the normal onion. Its examine text reads, "A strong smelling red onion."
Red onions grow from regular onion seeds in allotment patches. When the patch is fully grown, players must drink a potion of harvest first. Once the potion is active, red onions can be picked from the patch. A red onion also spawns in the south-western building at Marigold Farm in Havenhythe.
The main use for red onions is cooking. They are needed to make a primal main course, which takes 99 Cooking. The primal main course is one part of the primal feast, along with raw malletops meat, raw pavosaurus rex meat, and an heirloom tomato. Players working on high-level cooking goals will want red onions on hand for this recipe.
The red onion is a members-only item. It is tradeable and noteable, so it is easy to buy, sell, and move around. It cannot be equipped and does not stack in the inventory. Each red onion weighs 0.15 kg. Get red onions to skip the farming grind and cook right away.
