Description
Iron ore is a raw material in Old School RuneScape. Its examine text says it all: "This needs refining." Players smelt it at a furnace to turn it into metal bars for Smithing.
At level 15 Smithing, iron ore can be smelted into an iron bar for 12.5 experience. There is only a 50% chance the bar is made, unless the player wears a ring of forging, uses the Superheat Item spell, or uses the Blast Furnace. Those methods give a 100% success rate. At level 30 Smithing, one iron ore and two coal can be smelted into a steel bar for 17.5 experience.
Iron ore is a favorite for training. Smelting stacks of it is a simple way to push Smithing levels without high costs. Using Superheat Item on the ore also gives 43 Magic experience per cast, so players can train two skills at once.
The ore has quest uses too. Doric's Quest asks for 2 iron ore, and Charlie the Tramp may ask for one during a beginner clue scroll step. A supply of iron ore saves time spent mining, so players can get right to smelting and skilling.
