The sword degrades in combat and can be repaired. You can fix it at an armour stand, a whetstone, or an anvil with bane bars. A character who repairs equipment can also fix it for coins.

You can upgrade this sword one more time. Take it to a forge and anvil with 16 bane bars to make the Bane off hand longsword + 4. That raises it to tier 79 and grants 11,200 Smithing experience.
